Applying For a Job at Major Retailers

Teenager, or adult, in this tough economy, people will take any job they can get. More and more people are looking to work at major retailers, and this is creating competition. Even if it is your first time applying for a job, there are steps you can take to ensure that your chance of being hired is just as good as someone with years of experience.

You will first need to get all of the necessary information; educational background, skills, volunteer work, work experience, other work experience. If you have never had a job (a job as in one that you actually are paid by a company), you can still note babysitting, delivering papers, or other smaller jobs. All of this experience will help you, even if you do no think so.

A lot of retailer jobs do have age requirements, so when you go to submit a resume, ask. Generally, to work in a retail store, you need to be 16 years of age, give or take in some places. Generally, the older you are the higher chance you have of being hired. Though this is not fair, this is how retail stores work in the hiring process. Even if you do get hired and you are young, your work hours will usually be much more limited in comparison to an adult.

Upon submitting your application and resume, follow up regularly. Call the manager and show your interest. Even better, visit the store and talk to the manager in person. This has been shown to be one of the most effective methods of increasing chances of being hired in at retail stores.

Next, do not apply at just one place and sit back, hoping for the best. Apply at several retail stores. Mathematically, the more you apply the higher chance you have of being hired somewhere.

Applicants are often too picky with the manager. Do not make this mistake. You need to be flexible, and tell them you are available when they need you. On the other hand, if you are truly not available at a certain time to work, be sure to tell them this. You may have to work around extra activities and such if you want to be hired to work in a retail store.

Lastly, whenever you show up to the store, whether it is for submitting your application, or for the interview, you must dress nicely. It is a retail store, and presentation is a big thing in retail stores. If you are not sure of what to wear, come more formal, just in case. It is always better to be prepared in case.

Applying and being hired at a retail store is not impossible, even in the tough economy. Given the right attitude, it is possible. It is not always about past work experience. Everyone has to start somewhere, and employers do realize this. Be persistent, and you’ll be working in a retail store of your choice in no time!
